BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen has a 2-year postdoc position open, from September 1st, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter. Place of employment will be at Thorvaldsensvej 40, 1871 Frederiksberg C, Denmark.

Job description
The postdoc’s duties will include research on spatial and temporal soil biogeochemical data. Tasks will include applying novel approaches and high-resolution imaging techniques (e.g. optodes, zymography, 2D-DGT) to quantify and map gradients of soil biogeochemical parameters across the rhizosphere. These techniques will elucidate how the abundance and concentration of key chemical species varies across the soil pore to root matrix and how this may influence microbial activity and functions in bulk vs. rhizosphere and rhizoplane soil.

The postdoc will be working within an on-going collaborative research project, titled Decoding the Rhizobiota Interactome for Improved Crop Resilience (INTERACT) which is part of a larger consortia under the Collaborative Crop Resiliency Program (https://plen.ku.dk/english/research/microbial-ecology-and-biotechnology/mi/research-projects/interact/, funded by the Novo Nordic Foundation.

The work will mainly be carried out in plant root/soil mesocosms under controlled conditions in growth chambers or greenhouses, but may also involve field sampling. The postdoc will be working with own methods and data as well as in close collaboration with microbiologists and biochemists responsible for the characterization of microbiomes and metabolomes in the soil-rhizosphere-root-plant continuum. The position may also include teaching as well as other duties.

Description of the scientific environment
The postdoc will be part of the Soil Fertility research group (https://plen.ku.dk/forskning/plante--og-jordvidenskab/soil-fertility/), which focuses on soil fertility in agriculture, situated in the nexus of three main research topics: promoting circularity through resource recycling, appropriate nutrient management and reducing environmental impacts in agriculture.

Required qualifications

The applicants should hold professional as well as personal skills and qualifications as stated below:

  • A PhD degree in soil science, environmental science or related disciplines.
  • Strong knowledge of soil biogeochemistry and the mechanisms that determine key soil chemical equilibria, microbial activity and nutrient (in particular phosphorus) turnover processes.
  • Good technical skills and experience with plant-soil experimentation and modern chemical and microbiological soil analyses.
  • Knowledge about and interest for soil spatial imaging techniques (experience with e.g. fluorescent optode technology, zymography, DGT or others will be an advantage).
  • Competent on data management and statistical analysis, etc.
  • Good interpersonal skills, experience with collaborative work in larger multinational teams.
  • Excellent English writing and speaking abilities.
