We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher to study the cell-specific dynamics in cardiac arrhythmia, specifically in atrial fibrillation. We are hiring for a 2-year period and are looking for a candidate, who will be able to join the team in the autumn 2023. The project involves state-of-the-art methodologies within single cell RNA sequencing, advanced microscopy, and molecular and cell biology.

Our research
The overall goal of our interdisciplinary research is to address the physiology of ion channel complexes and their implication in disease. Many of our studies deal with the molecular regulation and biophysical mechanisms behind ion channel dysfunction observed in cardiac arrhythmia, especially in atrial fibrillation, Brugada syndrome and Long QT syndrome. Looking closer at atrial fibrillation, the implementation of Next Generation Sequencing techniques helped us to identify unexpected genetic contributors to disease in early-onset lone atrial fibrillation. However, several cases of incomplete penetrance in families, AF comorbidities and phenotype-genotype variability illustrate that the mechanisms of AF are more complex than the mere presence of a mutation. Hence, we now strive to unravel novel molecular mechanisms behind the disease using our exciting transcriptomics data from a large animal model and human samples.

Your job
We are looking for an ambitious postdoctoral candidate with a strong background in molecular and cellular cardiology. You will investigate how our data from a large animal model and human samples can be lead to the discovery of biomarkers.

You will collaborate within the group and our collaborators (in-house, in the hospital and international) to address these questions, integrate established experimental tools and methodologies, and complement this with your experience and expertise.

Ideally, you have ample experience in working with a variety of primary (cardiac) cell cultures (isolation & subsequent cell culture), RNA/DNA/protein isolation from biopsies, methods within molecular biology (e.g. cloning, qPCR, reporter gene assays), proteinbiochemistry (e.g. immunoblotting, immunoprecipitation), and cell culture and imaging (transfections, siRNA silencing, FACS, FISH, IF). Experience with single cell/single nuclei RNA seq methods and data interpretation is desirable.

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

  • You have a PhD in Life Sciences.
  • You are highly self-motivated and you have the ability to independently envision, plan and execute a research project.
  • You have an active interest in the research area of cardiac arrhythmias and you have worked with cardiac cells as well as with the development of cellular and biochemical assays
  • You have excellent technical skills and are highly experienced in cellular and molecular biology.
  • You have formal training in and experience with supervision of undergraduate students and are motivated to co-supervise Bachelor and Master thesis projects.
  • You have excellent English skills written and spoken.
  • You have proficient communication skills, a collaborative mindset and thrive working in teams.
Desirable experience and skills:

  • Experience with handling human biological samples/biobanks as well as experience with data management plans and policies is an advantage.
  • You are motivated to participate in the department’s teaching activities where experience in teaching in the area of cardiac physiology is seen as an advantage.
Place of employment

The place of employment is at the Dept. of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities are located on the 9th floor of the Mærsk Tower and include state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities. We have access to a number of core facilities at the Faculty. We have regular data meetings within the group. The Department has programmes and networks for junior scientific staff. The Faculty has a mentor programme for postdocs.

Terms of employment
The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 2 years. The starting date is 15 Sep 2023.

Salary, pension and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant organisation. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 36,290 DKK/approx. 4,870 EUR (April 2023 level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Foreign and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.
