Department of Chemistry
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

We are looking for a talented postdoctoral researcher to be the driving force of a project initiated through the Green Transition national initiative. The project aims to identify saccharide derivatives which could be produced from biomass and are suitable as plasticizers in starch-based bioplastics. In the project, most of these derivatives will be made in small scale through enzymatic reactions, in order to provide structure-function relationships in terms of their possible application as plasticizers. The project will be carried out in the group of Prof. Lo Leggio (leila@chem.ku.dk) at the Department of Chemistry, who has many years of expertise in the structure and function of carbohydrate modifying enzymes. The project involves strong collaboration with the group of Prof Blennow, leading in starch research, who has the know-how for small-scale production and characterization of starch-based biofilms. The position is available for a minimum of 2 years and up to 27 months depending on salary scale and starting date.

We are looking for a candidate with strong demonstrated analytical skills applied to carbohydrates and derivatives, which can become an asset to the project. Experience with chemical or biochemical synthesis, modification and purification of saccharides is a strong advantage. Experience with carbohydrate active enzymes and bioplastics are not strictly necessary as they are provided by the host groups, but are additionally qualifying. Please mention specifically in the research plan, what techniques you envisage using and your level of experience. Other desirable skills are

  • Demonstrated ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and supervise younger students
  • Experience with running/maintaining equipment for chemical analysis
  • Good written and oral communication in English
The postdoc’s duties will include research within the above project as well as teaching. The post may also include performance of other duties.

Further information on the Department is linked at http://www.science.ku.dk/english/about-the-faculty/organisation/. Inquiries about the position can be made to leila@chem.ku.dk

The position is open from 1 October 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
