We are offering a PhD fellowship in MS-based proteomics commencing 1 November 2023.

Our group and research
The Olsen Group address unsolved questions in cell signaling. The group aims to characterize how signaling networks regulate cellular responses differentially when mediated by phosphorylation and other modifications.

The major scientific focus area for the Olsen Group is quantitative, high-resolution mass spectrometry-based proteomics with specific emphasis on mass spectrometric technology developments and biological applications in cell signalling and cancer.

Project description
As part of an international collaborative project, the PhD student will unravel the cellular signaling events downstream of the kinase inhibitor regorafenib in Glioblastoma (GBM) to identify its protein targets. Delineating the molecular mechanisms of regorafenib resistance will present drug targets to overcome resistance to this multi-kinase inhibitor, and eventually further improve patient survival by rational drug combinations. To achieve this ambitious goal, state-of-the-art mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics will be exploited, which allows to comprehensively analyze the entire protein complement of a cell, including post-translational modifications (PTMs) and their interaction with small molecules including kinase inhibitor drugs. Quantitative proteomics, phosphoproteomics and thermal proteome profiling will be employed to globally profile the cellular regorafenib response. Using this systems level strategy, the PhD student will help identify the molecular traits of both intrinsic and acquired resistance to regorafenib in patient-derived GBM cells.

Job description
Your key tasks as a PhD student at SUND are:

  • Carrying through an independent research project under supervision.
  • Completing PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approximately 30 ECTS points.
  • Participating in active research environments including a stay at another research team.
  • Obtaining experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
  • Teaching and disseminating your knowledge.
  • Writing a PhD thesis on the grounds of your project
Key criteria for the assessment of applicants
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project, e.g. master degree in medical biology, biochemistry, chemical biology, or cell biology. Please note that your master’s degree must be equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (two years).

Other important criteria are:

  • The grade point average achieved
  • Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD project
  • Previous publications in the field
  • Relevant work experience in mass spectrometry and proteomics of cancer cells.
  • Other professional activities
  • A curious mind-set with a strong interest in cell signalling and cancer.
  • Language skills
Place of employment
The place of employment is at Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR), Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories.

Terms of employment
The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 3 years.

The employment is conditioned upon the applicant’s success­ful enrolment as a PhD student at the Graduate School at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.

The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the Faculty’s rules on achieving the degree.

Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agree­ment between the Ministry of Taxation and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary starts at approximately 28,800 DKK/Roughly 3,800 EUR (April 2023 level) plus pension.
