Our research

Our research group focuses on understanding the basic biology of the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas and how normal function of beta cells is defective in diabetes. We use cell and molecular biological approaches to address mechanisms of beta cell dysfunction including signal transduction, gene expression and epigenetic regulation. Our primary model system uses isolated pancreatic islets and animal models of diabetes and we study the effects of inflammatory signals on beta cell function. The overall aim is to identify targets and pathways that can prevent or reverse beta cells dysfunction in order to better treat or prevent diabetes.

We emphasize team work and encourage collaborations both within the group and with outside partners. We have a tradition of collaborating with groups both nationally and internationally and value an inclusive and open approach to research.
